Authentic Voice

When you write in your authentic voice, a reader will get pretty much the same experience they would get sitting down to chat with you over a cup of tea.

It may or may not be your best writing, but it still has value in certain circles. For example, it is the perfect voice to use for a blog or a first person narrative.

Writing in an informal, authentic, or chatty style can be a challenge for writers accustomed to writing in a formal, third person style.

Try adding a few descriptive words, and even cliches to your writing if you are struggling to develop a bloggy style, or if you cannot seem to find your authentic voice. (I normally recommend avoiding cliches altogether, due to cultural differences and varied interpretations, but for this exercise they can be helpful.)

Each type of writing, from the most formal to the most relaxed, has its place in the creative, journalistic world. If your authentic voice does not come to you naturally, don't worry, because it often takes a lot of practice to develop your own style of writing.
